Abstract:
The oral histories conducted for the Austin Hip Hop Oral History Project were part of the Austin History Center’s commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of Hip Hop in August 2023. For the inaugural Austin Hip Hop Honors Awards, the Austin History Center worked with members of the community to identify nine local artists and figures to be honored for their contributions to Austin hip hop culture. The honorees were asked to contribute an oral history documenting their experiences and careers in local hip hop. This collection of oral history recordings documents the early landscape of hip hop in and around Austin, development through the 1990s, and maturation of the scene into the 2000s, and covers a variety of people, places, and events from Austin’s rap and hip hop history.
