Abstract:
The Austin Asian American Film Festival (AAAFF) was originally started as the Austin Asian Film Festival in 2004 organized by CinemaAsia, a student organization at University of Texas at Austin. The festival changed its name to the AAAFF in 2007 and continued until 2009. After a 3-year hiatus, the festival was brought back by members of the Asian American Community in 2013. The collection includes the materials both from the original festival and the AAAFF; the planning documents, tickets, flyers, posters, program booklets, memorabilia as well as digital photos, posters and short promotional videos. The recording of the panel discussion by then and former directors for the “In-visible A” exhibit opening in January of 2024 is included.

Scope and Content:
The Austin Asian American Film Festival Records documents how the organization was found in 2003 and had grown to the staff-run, Asian American art non-profit organization that gathers local cinema community year-around (2003-2023). Series I contains the records from CinemaAsia (2003-2004). This series starts with the course materials at University of Texas at Austin that inspired the founders to start the organization. Administrative records, early festival planning documents, flyers, festival program, and memorabilia donated from the original founder make up the rest of this section. Series II is the records from Austin Asian Film Festival (2004-2007) that includes program booklet, business card, and promotional video files. Series III consists of the records from Austin Asian American Film Festival (2008-2009). Festival program booklet, tickets, flyers, business card, memorabilia, as well as digital files of poster, logo and videos narrates that the focus was shifted to include more stories of the Asian Americans. Series IV contains the records (2013-2023) after the festival was brought back from hiatus. Program booklets, badges, schedule cards, tickets, stickers sheets, other communication materials, posters and memorabilia make up most of this section. Digital files of pictures, posters, and videos in this series also documents their efforts to continue to provide places for the local community to gather online and in-person during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Series V contains the records from the opening event for the In/Visible A: the Building of an Asian American Film Community exhibit in January, 2024. A document prepared for the panel discussion, a flyer, digital recording of the panel discussion are included.
