Video taken by Dale Flatt of Save Austin's Cemeteries documenting the sewage runoff into San Jose Cemetery from neighboring properties.

2017-03-11

This film was originally made in 1943 by the Austin Chamber of Commerce and all the rights transferred to the Austin History Center in 2006. The film highlights a wide array of city landmarks, including the Texas State Capitol, University of Texas Tower, the Moonlight Towers, Zilker Park, and Barton Springs. By following the Smiths, new residents of Austin, the film also visits many of the city's main attractions, including several museums, Treaty Oak, and a Longhorn football game. An overview of Austin's government and healthcare buildings, as well as the lakes along the Colorado River, is also included. The film was preserved and digitized in 2008 and made possible by a Partnership Grant from the National Film Preservation Foundation. Run time: 31 minutes (color)

In March of 2020, at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, using his iPhone 11, Andrei Matei documented Austin streets that were virtually empty of cars and people. Scenes of downtown Austin and Congress Avenue are depicted, in addition to, several businesses and landmarks such as the Paramount Theater, Antone's, Lit Lounge, 24 Diner, Casino El Camino and the Austin Motel. The born-digital images are both in black-and-white and color.

Portrait of Elias Mays (Mayes), an original resident of Clarksville. Elias Mayes (other surname May and Mays), a Black state legislator, was one of the community’s most prominent early residents. He purchased two lots from Clark in 1884. His son Ben May (the last two letters in the name were dropped at some point), later lived at 1624 West 10th.
